Orthodontic Emergencies & Common Issues

Most orthodontic problems are not emergencies. Knowing the difference helps you stay calm and respond appropriately.

Emergencies: call immediately or seek emergency care

Trauma to the teeth, face or mouth
A knocked-out, loosened or fractured tooth is a dental emergency. Contact your dentist or visit an emergency room, then follow up with our office.

Swelling or signs of infection
Swelling that is spreading or accompanied by fever requires urgent attention. Call our office or go to an emergency room.

Severe pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter medication
Sudden, intense pain that does not respond to pain relief should be evaluated. Call our office.

Common issues: manage at home and call us during office hours

Loose or broken bracket
Leave it in place if still attached to the wire. Cover with orthodontic wax if uncomfortable. Save any pieces that come off and bring them to your next visit.

Poking wire
Push it into a comfortable position with a pencil eraser. If you cannot reposition it, cover the end with wax. Call our office for guidance.

General soreness
Normal after adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relief and warm salt water rinses help. Usually resolves in a few days.

Lost aligner
Contact our office. Your orthodontist may recommend moving to the next set or ordering a replacement.
