Protecting Your Results
Retainers & Post-Treatment Care
Orthodontic treatment does not end when braces come off or aligners are complete. Retention is one of the most important phases of care. Custom retainers protect the results you invested time and effort to achieve, keeping your teeth in their corrected positions for the long term.
At Bubon Orthodontics, retention is built into every treatment plan from the start.

Retainer Options at Bubon Orthodontics
Your orthodontist will recommend the retainer type that best supports your specific results. Each option serves a different purpose, and in some cases, a combination may be recommended.
Removable Invisalign Retainers
Invisalign retainers fit over your teeth like a thin, transparent tray. They are nearly invisible, easy to clean and comfortable for daily wear. Invisalign retainers are a common choice for patients who have completed Invisalign or braces treatment.
Fixed (Bonded) Retainers
A thin wire is bonded to the back of the front teeth, holding them in position permanently. Fixed retainers work continuously without requiring patient compliance and are often used in combination with a removable retainer.
Need Retainers but Not a Patient?
Lost your retainer from another orthodontist? We can help. Bubon Orthodontics offers Invisalign clear retainers to non-patients without requiring a full treatment plan. Schedule a visit at any of our Illinois locations and we will get you fitted.
What to Expect After Treatment
The transition from active treatment to retention is simple. Your orthodontist will fit your retainer on the same day your braces are removed or shortly after your final aligner.
The first year
Retainer wear is typically full-time (except while eating and brushing) for the first several months, then gradually reduced to nighttime wear based on your orthodontist's guidance.
Long-term wear
Most patients wear retainers at night indefinitely. Your orthodontist will provide clear instructions on the schedule that supports your specific results.
Check-ins
Periodic retention appointments allow your orthodontist to confirm that your teeth remain stable and your retainer fits properly.
Caring for Your Retainer

Clean your retainer daily
Rinse after each use. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water, which can warp clear retainers.

Store it in its case
When your retainer is not in your mouth, it should be in its case. Most retainers are lost or damaged when left on counters, wrapped in napkins or dropped.

Bring it to your appointments
Your orthodontist will check the fit and condition of your retainer during retention visits.

Contact us if something changes
If your retainer cracks, feels loose or no longer fits correctly, reach out right away. A quick adjustment is far easier than correcting shifted teeth.
Cost, Insurance and Planning
Retainers are included in most treatment plans at Bubon Orthodontics. If replacement retainers are needed, our team will provide clear pricing and options. The Smile Protection Plan may also help cover retainer replacement and post-treatment needs.

Questions We Hear Often
How long do I have to wear my retainer?
Most patients wear retainers full-time for the first several months, then transition to nighttime wear. Many orthodontists recommend nighttime retainer use indefinitely to protect long-term results.
Can I get a replacement retainer if mine breaks?
Yes. Contact our office and we will arrange a replacement. If you have a Smile Protection Plan, replacement retainers may be covered.
Do I still need to see my dentist during retention?
Yes. Retainer care does not replace routine dental checkups. Continue to see your general dentist for cleanings and exams as recommended.
What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?
Teeth can begin to shift within weeks of stopping retainer use. The longer you go without wearing your retainer, the more movement is likely. If this happens, contact our office as soon as possible.
Are retainers uncomfortable?
Retainers may feel snug when you first start wearing them, but most patients adjust quickly. They should never cause pain. If your retainer is uncomfortable, let your orthodontist know.
